Haida's Calf was a 38-day-old female Icelandic killer whale calf who lived at SeaWorld San Antonio. She was born there at 7:41 AM CST on November 20th, 1994. Her mother was Haida II and her father was Kotar. In late December, the calf fell ill and on December 28th, 1994, she succumbed to multifocal pyogranulomatous pneumonia at 38 days old.
Birth and Early Life[]
At 6:01am on November 20th, 1994, Haida II went into labor. Haida had her first calf, a male named Kyuquot, 3 years prior, and she was a very attentive mother. The calf was sired by Kotar. She was her mother's second calf, and was the 10th calf born at a SeaWorld park. [1] After 1 hour and 40 minutes, at 7:41am, she gave birth to a healthy female calf. The calf nursed normally until late December when she fell ill.
Death[]
The calf initially behaved normally and healthily, but began to decline in late December, exhibiting respiratory difficulties and not nursing. She was immediately given medical treatment, but she did not respond. The calf died during the afternoon of December 28th, 1994. [2]
