Zimo is a 2-year-old male Russian transient killer whale calf who currently lives at Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park. He was born there on December 5th, 2023. His mother is Dora and his father is Panghu.
Birth & Early Life[]
On December 5th, 2023, Dora gave birth to her first calf, sired by Panghu. After the birth, Dora became very weak due to excessive physical exertion. To prevent the calf from hitting the walls, trainers entered the water to help guide his swimming. At some point, he was separated from Dora and hand-raised by trainers. It is unknown if this was due to Dora’s inability to care for him or if she rejected him at birth. On March 30th, a naming contest was held for the calf. Nearly two months later, on May 24th, the park announced that his name was Pangdoubao, which directly translates to Fat Bean Bun in English. A few months afterward, it was revealed that his official name was Zimo, and that Pangdoubao would be used as his stage name.
Zimo was introduced to the rest of the pod by the time he was a few months old. The first interactions with the adult whales reportedly did not go well. However, he got along well with a young male named Cody, who was born at the park to Cookie in 2021. Zimo was eventually reintroduced to the adult whales and did well with them.
Zimo has learned basic behaviors and is performing them in shows alongside his pod. When he isn’t with just Cody, he is usually grouped with Dora, Cookie, Panghu, and Cody.
Transfer History[]
Zimo has never been transferred out of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park.
